Silencing mains noise

The Silencer is the first in our range of power conditioners. This DIY version is particularly suitable for those who are keen on modifying their own equipment: it’s ideal for fitting internally inside amplifiers, CD / DVD and Blu-ray disc players to bring the benefits of our mains filtering directly to your equipment.

The DIY Silencer is mounted in a robust ABS box and is fitted with 0.3m live, neutral and earth flying leads for soldering internally in equipment. Full fitting instructions are provided.

Please note that the DIY Silencer requires an Earth connection to the mains for it to be effective. If your equipment doesn't have one, then we recommend contacting us for advice.

N.B.: This product is designed to be used inside equipment and is not suitable for external use.

Reducing voltage spikes

In addition to being an effective mains conditioner, the Silencer incorporates our SuperClamp™ spike and surge protection to help reduce the effect of voltage spikes. SuperClamps 'grab' the spike and reduce its intensity.

In our opinion, high voltage spikes can raise the background noise level in amplification circuits which is why it makes good sense to try and reduce them.

To maintain their effectiveness, we recommend replacing SuperClamp™ components every five years. Any product with a SuperClamp™ can be returned to us for factory replacement of the parts at lower cost than buying a new product. Find out more about SuperClamp™ renewal.

The technology

The Silencer has been designed to efficiently remove degrading mains noise. It works passively, meaning that it has none of the drawbacks of some other mains filters – drawbacks such as loss of musicality and reduced dynamic range.

It is a wide-band filter, effective at filtering over a broad frequency range. For the techies amongst you, it is a 'passive, differential and common mode, inductorless, non-resonant, harmonic filter'.

Because The Silencer is a passive filter, nothing needs to be connected to it for it to work: it simply needs to be plugged into an earthed socket, with the socket switched on.

Review
The Silencer has featured in our range for many years on the principle that it simply works - and 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Clearly, Neville Roberts, reviewing, agrees as he has been using one himself for "several years".

It's pleasing to see an established product like this receiving an up to date review, especially when it gets such an unequivocal recommendation: "These devices really do work as described".

In Neville's case he found that The Silencer was even able to cure the annoying problem of clicking through his speakers. Having traced the cause of the problem back to his refrigerator he found that plugging The Silencer into a spare socket near to his system completely eradicated the issue.

In terms of the effects of The Silencer on sound quality he notes the drop in background noise and improvements in levels of detail extracted from recordings - just what we found and the effects are a much more involving musical experience.

All in all summed up as a "great product that won't break the bank".
