A simple way to hear better sound from your speakers

The metal face plate on your speaker’s dome tweeter can cause higher frequency reflection. Fit our oval Focus Rings to your speakers to help reduce this reflection to give a clearer and more focussed sound!

Made from felt for effective absorption, they are supplied in pairs and have a self adhesive backing for easy fitting. Designed to be used without speaker grills.

HI-FI WORLD March 2011 Review

A small item with a big impact seems to be the conclusion of the latest review of our Focus Rings. In their March 2011 edition, Hi-Fi World tested the rings on a number of speakers and found that “they made a difference in every case” What’s more, in the case of Adam Smith’s (the reviewer) own Ferrograph SI speakers, “the effects are quite ear-opening”.

He clarifies this with more detail, such as “the speakers’ entire top end seemed to snap into focus” and “the soundstage itself seemed better locked into place and, even in direct sonic terms, there was a delicate hint of extra crispness to everything”.

In conclusion, Adam states that “these seem a bit of a bargain” and that “for a simple but non-permanent change that gave a surprisingly vivid effect, I would strongly recommend giving them a go”.

    Fitting Focus Rings

    1. To determine the correct fitting of the Focus Ring (either vertical or horizontal) simply place the oval ring around your tweeter without removing the backing paper. For loudspeakers with a wide front baffle vertical is preferable.

    2. Gently peel the backing paper and carefully fit the focus ring around the tweeter ensuring the dome of the tweeter is central to the oval. It is important that you do not deform the oval shape.

    3. Once in place, gently press to ensure a secure fit. Since the adhesive is formulated for a strong bond you may find it difficult to remove once fitted. Note:

With speakers placed close to hard reflective surfaces you may hear a reduction in high frequency energy, due to a reduction in early sidewall reflection. At first you may feel that the sound has become 'dulled'. Don't panic! Once you become accustomed to the change, you will hear a noticeable improvement in clarity, depth of image and soundstage focus. The degree of improvement will vary depending on the design and quality of the tweeter.

    "Unbelievable!"
I was just about to give up on my Neat Motive 2 speakers. Their timing is spot on and are very exciting to listen to, but boy they can be bright with some recordings! As a last resort I purchased a pair of Russ Andrews Focus Rings and could not believe my ears! No more excessive brightness yet all the excitement remains and the sound is totally non- fatiguing! This has to be one of the most cost effective products ever! It's probably saved me the best part of £2,000 for buying replacement speakers!

    "Smooth Operator"
These have been applied to a heavily upgraded pair of Wharfedale 9's (better quality caps and resistors etc.). These are driven by a single ended 10 watt per channel valve amp. The effect has been to tone down the sharpness of treble output, but also to produce a more coherent sound. Well worth the cost of the rings.

"I Hate To Say It, But…"
…these rings really did snap things into focus. It’s like the speakers are communicating better with each other to present a more cohesive musical image between them. Very much a bargain.

    "Felt Rings"
I purchased these felt rings many years ago for my Ruark crusader mk11s. The tweeters on the Ruarks could never be accused of sounding bright in the first place but add the felt rings to the face plates and the sound becomes beautifully focused BUT with the grills in place and not removed as is recommended, (certainly with these speakers anyway) So its always worth experimenting.

    "Focus Rings"
I like to leave my speaker grilles off as this improves imaging and clarity. However, this gives a problem, as the tweeters sounded ‘spitty’ with some CDs. These focus rings have certainly solved the problem. I first tried them with one of my favourite recordings: Shostakovich’s fifth symphony LSO/Previn from 1965. The fortissimo opening of the final movement was a bit like being sprayed with broken glass, but with the rings in place the problem is eliminated. Other recordings with scraggy top ends are likewise improved, yet the rings don’t compromise the treble on good recordings. The only problem was with my bookshelf speakers – Role Audio Kayaks: the two drive units are close together, with the frame of the woofer overlapping the tweeter’s plate, and the rings were too big, but I just cut off a section from the bottom. Very highly recommended.

    "Really Works"
I used these rings on my "old" PMC DB1s and have now got around to fitting them to my twenty21s and they do what the leaflet says - great. My only adverse comment is that, unlike the first time I fitted them, removing the backing to expose the adhesive was quite difficult - but worth the effort.

"A Cheap And Effective Speaker Upgrade"
I used a pair of focus rings on on my previous PMC FB1s, and they tamed the slightly overbright metal tweeters. I have since changed to FB1is, and the focus rings have helped to place voices and instruments more clearly within the soundstage. After experimenting I found they work better (for me) in vertical orientation. Not all hi-fi upgrades have to be expensive, and these are highly recommended, a no-brainer really!

    "Thumbs Up!"
The foam grilles on my Heybrook HB2 disintegrated and the deadening around the tweeter with it, giving an unfocused diffuse splashy effect in the treble. Replacement grilles didn't have much effect. But adding these snapped the focus back straight away. For good measure I blind tested these with some friends, not all are audio enthusiasts either, and they confirmed what I thought, the sound is better with them on. Repeated the effect on a set of KEF 104ABs too. Definitely recommended

Focus Rings have tamed the metal tweeters on my speakers. Yet another star for RA products!
