  • Developing the Grounding System

A standout range from the past few years has to have been our grounding products and the RF Routers. Following the publication of Russ’s grounding guide in 2015 setting out his preferred way of grounding equipment casework, he has been modifying and perfecting his method to deliver increased performance. The latest SuperRouter and SuperRouter Signature ground components are the culmination of this work.

"SuperRouter features high specification, audio-quality components and intelligent circuitry to take performance to a completely new level. "

    What is RF Grounding?

The principle of Russ’s approach to signal grounding is to connect equipment casework to a ground point. This can be an external earth rod (the preferred route), or via the external terminal on one of our SuperSockets, UltraSockets or Signature Sockets. It’s important to remember that this is not supplementing your existing electrical ground but is specifically providing a path to ground for RFI, limiting its negative effects on audio signals.

Read our Guide to System Grounding

The way these connections are made is significant, but the most important element of Russ’s grounding is the use of the RF Router. The Router acts as an efficient RFI shunt, optimised for RF frequencies and means that the connections made are efficiently and effectively routing RF noise in a circuit to ground – hence the name ‘Router’.

    The SuperRouter RF Ground Component

While the existing RF Routers offer effective grounding, Russ knew that their performance could be improved upon. This led to the development of the two new SuperRouter products which incorporate everything we have learned about grounding over the last 40+ years. Where the RF Routers use more modest components, SuperRouters feature higher specification audio-quality components and intelligent circuitry to take performance to a completely new level.

"SuperRouters offer our best RF grounding yet and – from our listening tests – they deliver the most musical sound we’ve achieved"

    Integrating the SuperRouter

SuperRouters are designed to be used in the same way as our existing RF Router MKII, acting as the connection between the nominated 'hub' on your equipment and your grounding point. If you already have an RF Router, the SuperRouter is a straight swap.

Connect a grounding cable from your equipment to one of the outside binding posts on the SuperRouter; the central terminal on the SuperRouter is the one to be used for connecting to your grounding point. Ideally, this is a separate, external earth rod, but you can also use the ground terminal on the front of one of our wall sockets.

The SuperRouter is not supplied with any cables: it is designed to be used with our Technical Ground Weave cable - you can choose cable lengths and terminations here.

    Why multiple binding posts?

The SuperRouter is used in exactly the same way as our existing RF Routers, but the increased number of ground terminals makes it easier to accommodate larger, more complex systems. The additional terminals also allow the new EVO-S PowerKords to be integrated into the Grounding System by providing ample ground terminations for multiple mains cables.

    The Signature Edition

The SuperRouter Signature Edition replaces basic Nickel Binding posts with superior WBT-0710 posts for a superior connection and we’ve upgraded the top panel to a specially machined Cherrywood version. The internal custom circuit board and components remain the same.

"“Foregrounds The Musicality”"
I put the SuperRouter Signature to my ultimate test, by playing PiL’s Theme, from the 1978 original debut LP pressing, a record that was mastered to maximise the low-end frequencies. With its enormous bass sound and sludgy room ambience, this track is a demanding hi-fi challenge, and yet, the recording opened up like a landscape.

Hitherto previously unheard details were revealed, alongside the full breadth of the track’s bass guitar tone, which was rendered beautifully. The music sounded panoramic, exhibiting a voluminous depth of field.

My RF Router MK2 had served me well down the years, but I’m glad I made this upgrade, as it’s brought about a sense of the complete. I have gained access to a larger and more engrossing musical picture, along with a calmer overall sound. And the greater length of note decay, seems to elevate, and then steer, each musical phrase towards the sublime.

"What A Difference!"
Chassis grounding my source components to a Super Router using my pre amp as hub, and also my power amp and Purifier Block having their own separate runs to the Router has made a tremendous difference to the sound. The sound IS calmer and more natural [no grain] as stated by RA. Inner detail is clearly easier to hear and bass goes deeper, is more rounded and better developed. The benefits of all of this may vary with different systems and set ups, but for me there is no going back! Superb!

"Astonishing Grounding Upgrade"
I had my grounding sorted. The super router shows how much more improvement is possible. The music in the bass is hugely more enjoyable, the sound stage much wider and deeper, the whole performance clearer and more meaningful. I can hardly believe it. Superb. (seems like a lot of money, but it is worth every penny).
