overview
Why do we upgrade equipment?

Almost any Hi-Fi component can be upgraded to higher performance using our techniques and components. The two things go together – the know-how and the right component. Over the last 25 plus years, we have developed our knowledge of where the biggest problems lie and how to overcome them to unleash better performance from a given piece of equipment.

Quad 405.2 Power Amp Upgrade

The original 405 was developed in the late seventies and revised in the early eighties to the 405.2, this hugely popular power amplifier from Quad benefits from the following Russ Andrews upgrades to the power amp section: over 25 internal component changes, internal Kimber wiring, better binding posts dependent on the model and the addition of phono sockets (on the DIN input version) make this a fantastic upgrade. Please note that this upgrade works for both the original 405 and the 405.2. However, it is not an official upgrade to bring the original 405 to 405.2 specification. This upgrade focuses on the strengths of the 405 and builds on them.

Noisy Transformer?

If you’re suffering from a noisy transformer, we can upgrade that for your too! This consists of a brand new, super-silent toroidal transformer optimised for the 405 and it’s not a bad audio upgrade either!
Contact us if it’s something you’d like to add or even done just on its own. Please note, this is not part of the standard upgrade and is an additional extra.

Power amp section
18 component upgrades. Upgrades include Kimber Kap capacitors and Russ's favoured audio grade Panasonic capacitors which give a smooth and detailed sound.

Internal wiring

Internal wiring is taking care of, using Kimbers excellent all copper wire. For the signal wire, we've used a mixture of Tri-braid PBJ and single wire TCSS. For the power cable, we've used the thicker, all copper TCX wire.

Socket Upgrades

Two big changes are adding a pair of Phono (RCA) input sockets and two pairs of 3 way bindings posts. This two upgrades massively improve the amplifiers flexibility, opening up a wide choice of cabling options.
Please note; The DIN input socket is disconnected internally when the Phono sockets are fitted.

We use high quality, nickel plated sockets for both the phono and binding post connections.

Different Model?

If you don't have exactly the same model as listed above, but a very similar unit, then it's highly likely that the same upgrades will apply. But we can't guarantee that until we have the unit here for inspection. Get in touch and let us know what you have.

Exclamation IconEquipment condition.
It’s important to note that this service is specifically aimed at upgrading equipment in good working condition rather than repairing or servicing. Why? Well, these are two very different processes. Our upgrades look at improving existing parts – like capacitors, for example – and we have an awful lot of knowledge and experience of doing this. As many of these parts do wear over time, replacing them can have the added benefit of actually making the equipment more reliable and longer-lasting, but that is an added bonus rather than the central aim, which is to improve performance.
When it comes to servicing and repair, however, the specific knowledge of individual pieces of equipment that is required, along with access to the original electronic schematics, makes it unwise for anyone other than the manufacturer or authorised service agent to carry out this type of work.
The upgrade comes with a 2 year warranty, including all parts that we've used. This excludes failure of components beyond the work we have carried out. We therefore ask that the equipment you send for upgrade is in good working order.

Please note this is just an upgrade modification, it does not include the Quad amplifier.

Yes, I recommend this product.
"Pleasantly Surprised"
I selected this upgrade mainly to prolong the life of my 33 year old amp. My ears are twice as old! So, the improvement in the already very good sound is a bonus. The first thing I listened to was the lovely Globe theatre production of Midsummer Night's Dream, via iPlayer. Lots of sound: speech of course, music including a sitar, and many stage noises. The sound was more analytical and there was more bass. This was confirmed by various CDs,s and Radio 3 programmes. Very pleased.
Other kit: Spendor SP1s, Arcam Delta 70, Sky , Various Kimber mains and interconnect cables
