Curing clicks and pops

If you are suffering from audible clicks and pops through your Hi-Fi or Home Cinema, our Contact Suppressor and VDR kit can help to solve the problem. The kit is designed to suppress the noise caused by central heating thermostats, light and socket switches, and fridge and freezer thermostats switching on and off. In many cases the kit is the only way to cure the problem completely.

What to check

The first step in curing the noise is to check that the rest of the house wiring is in good condition and without fault. A loose screw in the neutral connection of a mains outlet or hidden junction box can cause the whole ring circuit to act as a transmitting aerial for switching clicks. Junction boxes can be hidden under floors – so we strongly recommend that you employ a qualified electrician to check your house wiring and trace junction boxes and cure any faults.

In some cases you may find that this solves the problem. If not, and once you've ensured that your wiring is electrically sound, you may find that the problem can only be cured at the source. Clicks are usually caused by light switches or sockets being switched on or off, and central heating and fridge and freezer thermostats switching on and off. Identify the offending switches or appliances and fit a switch contact suppressor and VDR across each switch contact terminal. The kit includes full fitting instructions.

What causes clicks and pops?

Clicks and pops are heard through your speakers (or headphones). They are commonly caused by thermostats (in, for example, fridges and freezers) and by the starters in fluorescent lights arcing as they switch on and off. The switch arcs as it operates and not only puts a 'click' onto the mains, but also puts out a radio frequency pulse which can be picked up by Hi-Fi cables and amplified as an audio signal. It is this RF 'click' which is so annoying in a Hi-Fi system and, of course, cannot be entirely removed by power filters. The RF 'click' can only be prevented by suppressing the switch that causes it.
