Trusted Reviews Meridian Ellipse Review

Online tech website Trusted Reviews recently took a look at Meridian’s high-end streaming speaker and came away mightily impressed with its “sublime sonic performance”.

The review's introductory text delves briefly into the background development of the Ellipse and its place within the wider Meridian R&D universe.
They highlight the fact that an audio product like Ellipse could only ever come from a company with an existing, deeply-grounded expertise in ‘Einstein-grade’ Digital Signal Processing (DSP). The result, they suggest, “is an uncompromising example of what can be done, when cost is a secondary concern”.
The first, most immediately obvious, reflection of such manufacturing prowess is in the design, fit and finish of the speaker.
High-quality Design
High quality materials are used throughout and formed in ways which match the unit's “understated elegance” with the needs of performance acoustics. The casework is classy and unobtrusive whilst also formed to be acoustically inert and reduce internal diffractions and resonances.
Likewise, the individual speakers are mounted in acoustically-isolated chambers within the front baffle to minimize interference.
Sound Quality
Given all this technical know-how and manufacturing expertise, you would expect this to be reflected in the musical performance and Ellipse doesn’t disappoint.
Key to any compact system with Hi-End pretentions will be its capacity to create a convincing stereo image - and this is an area where Ellipse excels.
We’ve referred to its ability to fool audiences into thinking they are listening to a traditional Hi-Fi setup before (one of the key reasons why we think this really is a true alternative to a second system in a small room).
The reviewer reflects the same experience whilst listening to Minoru Muraoka’s City Pop version of Dave Brubeck’s Take Five: “Muraoka’s flute work sounds almost three dimensional, while the crazed percussion showcases width and dynamics. Eyes shut; I’d swear I was listening to a pair of bookshelf speakers”.
Fortunately, such flawless DSP sound-staging trickery does not come at the expense of traditional musical prowess.
The unit also has the ability to reproduce clear, yet smooth, vocals. Bass, too, defies the Ellipse’s dimensions, and is “tight and fast, with natural weight”.
All of this comes at a price, of course, but the reviewer argues that this “is reflected in the speaker itself … [which] is a masterclass in audio engineering”.
